Todd C Varney
Branch Sales Manager, Bankers Life and Casualty CompanyMy journey to BankersLife is a special one. Upon graduating college from WVU in 2000, it was difficult to find a job. Every place I inquired not only wanted a degree, but also 10 years of experience. I was only 21 at the time and all I wanted in life at that point was to find a wife and a good job and I did not have either. I had to start somewhere so I decided to beef up my resume with experience by joining a temp agency and ran professional assignments in Northern Virginia. After doing that for nine months, I landed a job on my own with a company in Front Royal, VA. This opportunity was totally different than the insurance industry. I worked in a dirty warehouse as a supervisor and I was on my feet all day long on a hard concrete floor. Even though I was a supervisor, I often at times had to get in and do the manual labor as required. The culture of that company was that all supervisors and managers had to work a minimum of 12 hours per day. My typical day was getting up at 5:15 a.m. and return home around 8:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday. I was paid a salary and only got paid once a month and regardless of how many hours I worked (and even if I worked Saturdays), I received the same pay for my efforts. This was obviously very frustrating, and after doing that for 3 years, I looked at myself in the mirror and thought “Do you want to do this for the rest of your life”? I decided to put my resume online and was contacted by BankersLife. I accepted the opportunity and was contracted as an agent on May 11, 2004. Later in my career, I acquired my Series 6 and 63 licenses and was appointed as a Financial Representative. I then added to that and acquired my Series 65 security license to become an Investment Advisor Representative. To make a long story short, I just celebrated my 16th anniversary with BankersLife and I couldn't be happier. I have had almost every position within a Bankers Field office and enjoyed every one of them. Although, I don't get that instant feeling like “scoring a touchdown” like I did as an agent when I pulled out of a seniors' driveway knowing full well that I helped them AND made good money doing it, I still get the internal satisfaction of watching my agents and leaders excel personally, professionally and financially.
